Andrea Valvini is a Swiss sound artist based in Canton Vaud. His practice explores the sound-silence couple through field recording, electroacoustic composition, and live analog performance. Working with IRCAM tools, analog synthesis, and Ableton, he treats recording as memory of the day — a form of sonic street photography — where attentive listening reveals the acoustic dynamics of contemporary infrastructures and social spaces.

His artistic journey begins at the Geneva Conservatory (classical percussion, jazz), then as drummer for the band Goz of Kermeur (1990-2000, albums and international tours). Between 2000 and 2008, he co-founds Elefanten Mixtur in Geneva with Basile Zimmermann — a pioneering multichannel sound event series — and creates sound design for Expo02 (Swiss National Exhibition). In 2008, he curates «大象過海 – Elefanten across the ocean AO08», a major exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung, Taiwan. This decade sees him perform solo (drums, live electronics), creations for dance and theater companies in Geneva, and collaborate with artists across Switzerland, France, Belgium, Taiwan, Japan.

Parallel to his musical practice, Andrea dedicated forty years to martial arts (1984-2024). Trained in Japanese and Chinese martial arts, he devoted as many hours to this discipline as to his instrument: daily practice, competitions, transmission of knowledge. Over the years — through evolution, injuries, tinnitus — these two worlds found accord: art as embodied practice of shared human values, the body on stage giving form to artistic expression. This dual formation forged his understanding of motivated gesture, a central concept in his current work.

In 2011, Andrea takes a deliberate thirteen-year pause to found a biological and ethical food enterprise. This period of grounding in work of the earth profoundly enriches his return to artistic practice in 2024: renewed attention to ecological responsibility, horizontal collaboration, and the link between abstract research and lived material conditions.

Since 2024, he develops “Listening, Gesture, Memory” — a multi-year research combining field recordings, electroacoustic compositions, and written reflections (Substack, Research Catalogue). In November 2025, he performs two concerts in Taiwan (Tainan, Taipei) and surveys Kaohsiung Port in preparation for his PAIR residency (February-May 2026) at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.

His approach combines the artist’s rigor — action, respect, attention, openness to the world — and the academic’s reflection. Through workshops and performances, he demystifies sound creation and invites diverse audiences into sustained listening experiences, making the invisible visible through visual representations of sound (sonograms, spectrograms).

Parallèlement à sa pratique musicale, Andrea a consacré quarante ans aux arts martiaux (1984-2024). Formé aux arts martiaux japonais et chinois, il a dédié à cette discipline autant d’heures qu’à son instrument : pratique quotidienne, compétitions, transmission du savoir. Au fil des années — à travers évolution, blessures, acouphènes — ces deux univers ont trouvé un accord : l’art comme mise en pratique de valeurs humaines partagées, le corps sur scène donnant forme à l’expression artistique. Cette double formation a forgé sa compréhension du geste motivé, concept central de son travail actuel.

En 2011, Andrea prend une pause délibérée de treize ans pour fonder une entreprise d’alimentation biologique et éthique. Cette période d’ancrage dans le travail de la terre enrichit profondément son retour à la pratique artistique en 2024 : une attention renouvelée à la responsabilité écologique, à la collaboration horizontale et au lien entre recherche abstraite et conditions matérielles vécues.

Depuis 2024, il développe “Écoute, Geste, Mémoire” — recherche pluriannuelle combinant enregistrements de terrain, compositions électroacoustiques et réflexions écrites (Substack, Research Catalogue). En novembre 2025, il donne deux concerts à Taiwan (Tainan, Taipei) et prospecte le port de Kaohsiung en préparation de sa résidence PAIR (février-mai 2026) au Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.

Sa démarche conjugue la rigueur de l’artiste — action, respect, attention, ouverture au monde — et la réflexion de l’académicien. À travers workshops et performances, il démystifie la création sonore et invite des publics divers à des expériences d’écoute soutenue, rendant visible l’invisible par des représentations visuelles du son (sonogrammes, spectrogrammes).
